Wooden Frames

Wooden window frames are still very popular with certain properties and consumers. Period homes suit wooden frames much better than PVC-u and aluminium frames and indeed some homes in listed areas must have traditional wooden frames. That is not to say that wooden frames do not look good on modern homes. On the contrary there is little doubt that wooden frames are the most aesthetically pleasing of all the different makes of frame.

The plus points of wooden frames are quite clear in that they are appealing, strong and good insulators. A major downside is that they tend to be more somewhat more expensive than their aluminium and PVC-u counterparts. In very broad terms the PVC-u frames are the cheapest, then aluminium and then wooden frames. The other problem with wooden frames is that they have the shortest live of the three materials and still require more attention. Regularly protection and maintenance is needed to keep the appearance. Although wooden frames are the most appealing, it is only when they are well maintained. Frames that have warped or rotted look distinctly unappealing. Generally speaking wooden frames should be regularly treated around every 4 or 5 years.

Modern wooden frames however are much more durable. Commonly made out of hardwood, cedar or pine, they are treated in the factory and usually come with a guarantee. Also, there is more knowledge about the treatments and care required to prolong the lifespan of wooden frames.

Even though there is a burden with respect to the care of the wooden frame, there is no denying its major advantage, which is its aesthetic appeal.
