In the later half of the 20th century on the back of the rise in popularity of aluminium window frames, double-glazed windows and doors also gained in popularity. An aluminium frame has one major asset and that is its strength. This in turns leads to greater flexibility for window frames as the aluminium could be worked into slim frames. This had not really been possible with wood, however, aluminium provided not only greater strength but is also more resistant to the elements and thus less likely to warp or even rot.
Another advantage that aluminium gains through its strength is the increased level of security. It is much harder for the would be intruder to compromise the strong aluminium frame. Certainly much harder than wood.
Aluminium frames are also easy to look after and can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth or rag. They are also available in a wide range of finishes.
Given all this though the aluminium frame is still on the decline. The introduction of PVCu frames into the window world has changed everything. The reason is that PVCu frames are not only cheaper but also at least as durable even if they do not have the strength of aluminium.
Apart from the price the other major disadvantage of aluminium frames compared to PVCu and wooden frames are that they are poor insulators of heat. This has been partly solved by the use of thermal breaks in the frames which do improve the insulation properties of the frame.
When compared to wooden frames, aluminium loses out in its aesthetic appeal. It appears that apart from its strength, aluminium frames do not compare favourably with either wood or PVCu. Wooden frames have a more traditional classical appeal and PVCu have an economical appeal, so aluminium falls short on both sides of the coin.
Having said all that, there is no doubt that double-glazed aluminium doors and windows are ideal for keeping your home or property safe and draught free. The inherent strength of the frame means that they are an ideal solution for commercial locations or indeed any place that has strength is the major concern. However, in your home, where the either the appeal or the cost is paramount, then aluminium frames do fall short.
